Engineers need training to use the Technical Guidelines for Engineering Assessments (the Guidelines) so seismic assessments of existing buildings are carried out consistently throughout New Zealand.
The first short course on the Guidelines (held between November 2016 and February 2017) introduced the updated Detailed Seismic Assessment methods. It covered the first four sections of Part C that are common to the specific material sections (C1, C2, C3 and C4) and the Concrete Buildings section (C5).
Course participants were expected to watch three Training Videos videos before attending, which introduce and provide an overview of the assessment objectives and principles within Part A, Geotechnical Considerations, and the Simplified Lateral Mechanism Analysis (SLaMA) method. The course provided an opportunity for structural and geotechnical engineers to work together on assessments of medium-rise concrete buildings and will demonstrate the standard expected for reporting assessments and ratings.
The presentations for the first three sessions may be viewed using the links below once NZSEE, NZGS and SESOC members have activated (and preferably viewed) the three Training Videos:
Session 1 – Overview of DSA Assessment and Analysis
Session 2 – Geotechnical Considerations and Concrete Buildings
Session 3 – Worked Example
Session 4 – Reporting Assessment Results, Recap on key points, Questions and Wrap up
